To Know Him is to Love Him
What if we really took the daddy of all commandments seriously? No doubt, you know the one I’m talking about. Jesus called it the first and the greatest. He charged, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37). This is where all fall short. We also fall short of excuses. How does one justify not loving the Lord enough? We can’t fault heredity or society can we? We can’t point the finger at others. Heck, we can’t even excuse it as some genetic flub – “Sorry, Lord, I’m devotionally challenged!” No, we have only ourselves to blame. Love is something we willfully choose whether or not to do. When it comes to loving God with the entirety of our heart, mind and soul – every one of us misses the mark. True, some love God more than others, but even they’d tell you they don’t love Him nearly enough.
Do you love God with all that is within you? Have you committed your entire being to loving Him? Are you completely obsessed with loving Him each and every day, every moment of the day? Excuse me for relying on rhetoric from the disco era, but I ask the very question asked by the Bee Gees, “How deep is your love?” Let’s face it; we all have room for growth in this area. And that’s the exciting thing about being a child of God. We get to watch love grow! We can grow closer to the Lord and as we do, we fall more deeply in love with Him.
If you thought it was about religion or rituals or signing off on a long list of rules and regulations, you are sorely mistaken. Christianity is more of an adventure, a divine romance, in which we pursue God and seek to know Him more. It’s about spending time in His presence, experiencing the love He gives and channeling that love right back where it came from.
